Helping Fund Beacon

Pledges and open collections aren't always enough to allow us to undertake all the activities that we deem necessary for a healthy church. There are several fundraising initiatives, some ongoing, some periodic. Often, these initiatives happen through the dedication of one person with an idea. Check out what Beacon has to offer!

Fairly Traded Coffee and Cocoa

Every week after church, there is fairly traded, organic coffee from Pistol & Burnes and fairly traded, organic cocoa from Cocoa Camino available for sale. Coffee and cocoa are commodities, and the price of commodities is determined by futures contracts. It doesn't matter whether producers can live off the the dictated price or not. Fair trade ensures that the producers themselves make a sufficient profit. Organic ensures proper stewardship of the land on which coffee and cacao beans are grown. Contact Laura Ramsey to place your order for light or dark roast, beans or ground, regular or decaffeinated, and some of the tastiest hot cocoa mix around.

Soup Lunches

After the service on the last Sunday of the month, the esteemed Anne McLeod hosts soup lunches for the benefit of Beacon. Soup, bread, and who knows what else are available for $5 (more won't be refused!). Why go home hungry? Good eats and good company, Beacon style! Contact Anne if you want to help out.

Free-range Organic Chicken

Fresh and frozen free-range organic whole chicken, breasts, and legs, are now available. Contact Tom Poiker to place your order or sign up after church on the sheet at the announcement board in the back of the hall.

Other Fundraising Activities

Throughout the year, there are various fundraising projects that double as social gatherings. Spring often brings a perennial plant sale. In late autumn, there is always the big Beacon craft sale, just in time for Christmas shopping. Other initiatives have included guided tours of the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary and to the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. Beaconites are always thinking of new ways to raise money and have fun at the same time!
