Helping Beacon

Like any small organization, Beacon depends on its members and adherents to keep it running smoothly. For those oriented toward helping their fellow Beaconites, there are several opportunities, from helping to plan and set up for services to taking care of members in need.

Co-operative Ministry

Services at Beacon don't just happen. Come on Sunday to the lower hall at Place Maillardville and members will greet you warmly as you pass through the door. As you walk into the main hall, you will see that some people have set up a particular arrangement of tables and chairs. Turn toward the front and you will see that someone has created a sanctuary from a community hall with flowers, banners, other decorations. Every other seat contains a hymnal. During the service, people will help pass the collection baskets; others will do the counting afterward. After the service, someone will have set up coffee, tea, and goodies. More folks will be at the book table, and someone will have set up an information table.

All these things happen thanks to a dedicated group engaged in co-operative ministry—people who commit to a particular task once every few weeks. Working with the Co-operative Ministry team is a great way to pitch in and help out without making a large investment of time, just a bit extra on Sunday. It's also a great way to get to know the people at Beacon! Anyone interested in being available should contact the co-ordinators, Katie Tong and Robert Hwang.

Worship Services Committee

The Worship Services Committee is the place where the planning for services takes place. Committee members draw on their talent and creativity to map out the church year in co-ordination with Rev. Katie Stein Sather, the Music Director, and the Religious Exploration programme. They determine when guest speakers will be invited and when members of the congregation will be speaking. Service co-ordinators work with the minister or other speaker, the person setting up sanctuary aesthetics, and anyone else involved with the service in order to create a spirit of community celebration for all who pass through our doors. The committee can always use new members who are interested in shaping the worship experience. Contact John Slattery.

Connections/Member Services

The Connections/Member Services Committee, chaired by Anita Hagen, works in all areas having to do with membership, whether prospective, new, or of long standing. If you are new, these are the people who will do follow-up and make sure you are informed of activities at Beacon.

Care and Concern Committee

At Beacon, we care for each other's well-being throughout the weeks and seasons. Whenever someone in our congregation has a special need we let each other know through the coordination of our Care and Concern Committee. We activate support for personal visits, phone calls, cards, flowers, or food contributions.

If you would like to know more about the ways we offer friendship and support to each other, or if you know someone who has a need, please contact co-ordinators Dan Theal or Naomi Kerr. We welcome volunteers who would be interested in being called on when a friendly and helping hand is needed. Know that when you reach out to people, particularly those living alone, your friendship and kindness is deeply welcomed.
