JOB DESCRIPTION:  Beacon Lifespan Learning Consultant

General responsibilities:  The Lifespan Learning Consultant, in consultation with the

Lifespan Learning Committee, is responsible for the direction and administration of the Lifespan Learning Program for children, youth and adults of Beacon Unitarian Church. 

 

1.         Ensure that a quality educational program is provided

  • Select appropriate curricula subject to the approval of the LL Committee
  • Ensure that necessary curriculum materials, supplies and equipment are available at the beginning of class, on Sunday mornings or other times, for the use of teachers
  • Ensure that the space is set up, ready for use on Sunday mornings
  • Recruit, orient, train and supervise teachers.  This will include consultation and provision of feedback
  • Supervise and act as resource person for youth advisor.
  • Encourage and lead children to participate in at least one project in support of social justice or the environment during the year
  • Participate in developing and administering a yearly program review to ensure that the program is effective and engaging.  This review should be completed in June in order for the results to be considered at the annual LL retreat
  • In cooperation with the LL Committee, Minister, Board and congregation, participate in a regular review of the vision, mission and goals of Beacon’s Lifespan Learning Program.
  • Work with Minister and LL Committee to develop and implement an Adult Education Program.

 

2.         Establish and maintain effective communication channels

  • Attend meetings of the LL Committee and consult regularly with the LL Chair regarding events, activities and any issues or concerns
  • Attend Coordinating Council meetings
  • Provide articles in the newsletter to communicate the goals and activities of the LL program to the congregation
  • Facilitate the resolution of conflicts between or among children, teachers and parents, consulting as necessary with the Minister, teachers and parents
  • Consult with the Minister and parents regarding special needs
  • Provide information about LL for Beacon church website

 

3.         Work cooperatively with the LL Committee to handle administrative functions      related to LL

  • Working with the Chair of the LL Committee, ensure LL Committee volunteers receive orientation and have clear job descriptions, especially for key positions of registrar, treasurer and volunteer coordinator 
  • With the LL Committee, prepare a yearly budget request for the administration costs of the LL Program for submission to the Board in September
  • Ensure program administration costs are kept within the approved budget
  • Greet and ensure registration of new children and families, and provide an orientation to the Beacon LL Program
  • Monitor attendance records, and follow up on absences
  • Develop and maintain the LL library and resources file

 

 

4.         Participate in Worship Planning and Organization   

  • Consult regularly with the Minister and Worship Committee Chair regarding the participation of children and youth in worship services during times the children are in the service
  • Arrange for the scheduling of and coordinate a minimum of two intergenerational services each church year

 

 

5.         Maintain professional and positive working relationships

  • With the LL Committee, the Minister, the Worship Committee Chair and Connections Committee Chair, the Youth Advisor, the President and LL Liaison

 

 

6.         Provide reports to the Board and Congregation

  • Prepare a report on the major activities and initiatives of Lifespan Learning for the past year for the Annual General Meeting in April
  • Report monthly to the Board of Trustees through the LL liaison to the LL Committee

 

                   

7.         Engage in program promotion

  • Participate in new member orientation meetings at times agreed upon with the Minister and the Connections Committee in order to describe and promote the LL program to prospective new members
  • In conjunction with the LL Committee, develop and implement at least one outreach activity to attract newcomers 

 

8.         Engage in professional development

  • Attend at least one professional development activity per church year, such as Renaissance training.

 

9.         Miscellaneous

·        Perform other duties relating to the Lifespan Learning Program as required.
