Our Mission

Our mission is to celebrate the worth and dignity of all people and to live in conscious relationship with the earth. For inspiration, we draw on the world’s great scientists, artists, humanists and theologians, as well as on our personal experiences. So we are inspired to create greater equality, greater justice and greater hope for our world.

What Do We Believe?

We often have a hard time answering this question because Unitarians are not bound by a common religious belief. Instead, Unitarian congregations covenant to uphold shared principles. These principles demonstrate that we believe in respect, equality, justice, peace, the democratic process, and living in harmony and sustainability with the earth.

The principles are not creedal documents, nor is affirming them required for membership (for instance, many of us here at Beacon feel that principle eight is better viewed as a call to action rather than a principle). Individual Unitarians are free to interpret the principles in the context of their own lives. As was attributed to an early Unitarian 500 years ago, “We need not think alike to love alike.”

We believe it makes no difference whether you are agnostic or atheistic or believe in Jesus, Buddha, or another deity, but rather how you live your life. These principles may help guide us in our decisions about how to live our lives.

We draw from many religious and ethical sources, but the covenant which binds our national association of congregations together is the affirmation of these eight principles.

We look forward to meeting you!

It features a simple, heartfelt song of inclusion alongside a slideshow of Unitarian communities across Canada showing support for people of all genders and sexual orientations. We share it as an expression of belonging that continues to inspire our community today.

What is a Unitarian Universalist?

We are people of all ages, people of many backgrounds, and people of many beliefs. We create spirituality and community beyond boundaries, working for more justice and more love in our own lives and in the world.

Our spirituality is unbounded – drawing from scripture and science, nature and philosophy, personal experience and ancient tradition – see our six Sources.

Unitarian Universalists believe that each person is free to search for his or her own personal truth in regard to the nature and meaning of life.

Unitarian Universalists affirm and promote eight Principles. (with excerpts from www.uua.org/beliefs.)
