Sunday, August 8, 10:30 a.m. Blessing the animals—cancelled due to weather conditions
Rev. Trish Schwartzberg and Renie McRae
Service offered by the South Fraser Unitarian Congregation, which Beaconites are most welcome to attend: This will be a service for the entire family, including your well-mannered pets. If you are not able to bring your pet, bring a picture to share. Share stories of how animals are, or have been, a part of your life. We will meet at the shelter in Hazelnut Meadows Park for a short service and then we will enjoy time together at a pot-luck picnic. Please bring food to share. Hazelnut Meadows Park is very close to the Newton Seniors’ Centre. From the center you will go east on 70th Ave. and follow the curve around Chelsea Gardens where it changes to 140 St. The park entrance is on the left.
Sunday, August 22, 10:30 a.m. Music in the Summer Come join us to sing some new and mostly old favourite hymns, or bring your instrument and play along. There is no audition for singers or players; we welcome you as you are. There will be hymnbooks, including the "Joyce Poley" books. If you've hungered for more than three hymns at a service and would be just as happy singing as listening to the sermon on a beautiful August morning, this is the service for you. If you don't know all our hymns, it's a wonderful opportunity to get comfortable with a few more of our musical treasures. Please join us after the service for beverages and conversation and a potluck lunch. Call Peggy Lunderville for any questions or further information. Location: Lunderville residence—604-522-3001

This year we will share our Sunday offering plate with the Elizabeth Fry Society, whose impressive work with marginalized women, families and youth is comprehensive, realistic, lifeaffirming and life-changing. The Society is also a neighbour, with head office and services just around the corner from Beacon Church. Let's warmly welcome a neighbour and learn more about Beacon's 2010-11 social justice partnership.

Shawn Bayes is the Executive Director and CEO of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Greater Vancouver, a nonprofit organization providing support to women, girls and children involved in or affected by the justice system.
